Private villa rental in Tuscany remains the most rewarding way to spend a week or two in Italy for UK families and group travellers — but the difference between an extraordinary villa holiday and a frustrating one comes down almost entirely to the planning underneath.
Tuscany is not one destination — it is at least five. The Chianti hills between Florence and Siena offer classic vineyard countryside and the most established villa rental market. The Val d'Orcia is the postcard Tuscany of cypress avenues and Pienza. The Maremma is the under-discovered coastal south. Lucca and the Garfagnana sit to the north-west. The Apuan Alps and Lunigiana are the wildest, most authentic corner.
